About the PSA

The St Nicolas' Parents and Staff Association (PSA) is made up of all parents ?and staff at St Nicolas' School – everyone is welcome to come along to the meetings and join in.  There is a small committee: currently two co-Chairs, a Treasurer, a Secretary and two co-opted members, as well as many others who come along and help to organise social and fundraising events throughout the year. The money we raise is used to buy additional items and equipment for the school; subsidise outside school trips as well as after-school parties for the children; and fund  educational groups and visitors who come to the school.

We are a really active, thriving association, and new ideas and faces are always welcome. Being part of the PSA is fun and rewarding, and a great opportunity to meet other parents and make a real impact on the children's learning and enjoyment at the school.

Funds are raised primarily through the Christmas and May Fairs. Other popular events include the annual quiz night – with much fun and competitive spirit amongst the teams; the recently introduced Sponsored Mile; and cake sales.

We also support a number of non-profit making activities – to bring some added fun to the school year.  These include the after school party, with a magic show and disco, and the all school egg and spoon race.

Generally speaking we raise around £6,500 each year (although additional funds have been raised recently following an appeal to replace the playground's Pirate Ship), which is a fantastic amount for a school of our size – and we are grateful to each and every parent, carer, helper, grandparent and neighbour, who bakes cakes or raffle tickets, gives us their time and continually supports the activities.

In the last few years we have funded the replacement pirate ship,  a new kiln, a sandpit and accessories for the quiet zone, new equipment for the Beech class playground, blackout blinds for the school hall, materials for art projects, educational online packages (twinkl and purple mash), extra non-fiction books for the library, a visit from a travelling planetarium, trips to the Panto for Y2, subsidised whole school trips to Hobbledown and Blue Reef Aquarium, Portsmouth, and the ever so important ice creams at sports day.  We also donate money to each class each term for the teachers to spend on any additional resources they feel would best help their pupils.

Each and every one of you is welcome to come to the meetings where we discuss and decide what events to run, how to organise and run those events, and work with Miss Woodhouse and her team, and on how the funds should be spent to the benefit of the children. Do please come along and join in – we are a friendly bunch! We currently meet about every four weeks straight after drop off on a Friday morning, but if you do wish to be involved or even organise an event, but cannot attend morning meetings, please do let one of the committee members know: as long as the main committee is kept aware and updated, you can always start up or join a sub-committee (for instance, the 2016 May Fair sub-committee met of an evening).

Being part of the PSA, whether as a committee member, a visitor to a meeting, or an event volunteer is fun and very rewarding. It helps you to be involved with your child’s education and to get to know the school and its community!

We look forward to meeting you soon, if we haven't already.

Michelle Christophorou and Rebecca Harney
